Political Distribution
|
You hear a lot about "left-wing" and "right-wing" and the question has to occur to you, "Where am I on the political spectrum?"
Well, if you imagine that the distribution of American voters is typical of most things in life, its probably well distributed in a normal fashion.
If you were the perfect centrist, half of the voters would be more liberal than you, half would be more conservative.
Where is Obama? How many people are more liberal than him and how many are more conservative?
Charlie Brown?
Here is a shot at it in graphic form. Think about where you fit.

RT, you didn't move yourself far enough to the right.
Very good color crayon picture, Rash-T.
Did you color it all by yourself, or did the orderlies help you with the hard parts?
Let's see, there are some purple hills with a great big pink mountain balancing on top of them, right? Or is it the mother ship launching three flying saucers? Anyway, it's very pretty.
I see you even put Chunga and Miuwtant's names in the picture, too. That's nice.
it's amusing :) I'm not so sure about the accurracy of placement for most on the graph, but I did get a little laugh to start the morning!
Skeptic,
You were in the picture too...don't feel left out...oh wait, you were LEFT so far that it fell off the page.
You guys like to think I am a right wing extremist but actually I am pretty willing to consider the balance of issues.
There are some useful points in this chart.
1) Obama is to the left of almost all Americans. He supports abortion on demand, even in the last tri-mester, and even if the aborted baby survives the abortion. He supports higher taxes, weaker military, government control over more of our lives.
2) Charlie Brown is significantly out of step with the average Placer County voter. He also supports abortion, gay marriage, higher taxes, government control.
3) John McCain, while significantly to the left of most Republicans, actually is more aligned with the average voter. The media tends to portray him as conservative.
4) GW Bush, the guy who increased spending, allows illegals into our country, and supported the Kennedy NCLB federal takeover of our education system is not the big conservative he is claimed to be.
5) Tom McClintock is actually a little to the right of the average Placer County voter, but not nearly as far from us than Charlie is on the left.
6) And of course, the radical left-wing cuckoos that surf this blog and support both Charlie and Barrack, they are way left of the entire world. Blame America first, abandon the troops in the battlefield, Code Pink VFP nuttys.
Oh..on #6, I can understand why you guys think Charlie is a moderate...compared to you, he looks like a baptist minister. But his anti-war stance, big government, pro-abortion, pro-gay marriage positions pull him back much closer than your narrow vision allows you to see.
Brilliant, as usual, RT. Very poignant. Of course, the local leftist idiots can't argue logically so they attack personally. No surprise there.
to finish the song... here i am, stuck in the middle with(out) you."
mrex, pot kettle black, dude. accusing others of personal attacks while calling them "leftist idiots" with nothing meaningful to add beyond that. right, uh huh, sure. LOL and as made obvious by you not arguing logically is telling in itself. there's nothing to argue here because it is obviously lacking in logic if one care to take a real look. it's just r_t having some yucks with his free time as he admittedly tries to get a rise out of people (which is a partial definition of "internet troll").
r_t, i like how you try to get a rise out of those (us?) "cuckoos" but even we realize that you do so with your own opinon, which is perfectly valid of course, and items like your #6 is not based in fact or backed up with substantive truth of any kind... just your opinion and personal rhetoric is all. just wanted to let you know that we at least understand this. your brand of humor comes from opinion and not based on actual world realities. very funny in that context... thanks!
The lack of meaningful dialog and pertinent points by the right in the blogs here is laughable. Why waste time with make believe charts and fantasy ratings of people you don't know RT? Nothing better to do with your time than create your pretend charts with pretty colors? How sad...
The fact of the matter is new off-shore drilling here is opposed by most in CA and it will have little or no affect on our gasoline prices for nearly a decade! IF at all. The Clinton/McCain idea fo a gas tax suspension is equally as ridiculous and in-effective. It would provide no real relief and is purely a stunt. The oil cos have too many leases to use now and many more already available to them. Use those first! Relief for our energy problems must come from conservation, new techs and alternative fuels. Getting off oil is our nation's and the entire planet's only long term alternative.
Try thinking beyond next month or next year for once. Think about your grandchildren and their grandchildren. We need new plans, long term plans, for the absolutely unavoidable end to oil as the main energy source for the world.
IndiLyndi: I am more than happy to have a discussion on the points made with these charts, and what you have to say about the post.
For instance, you say "off-shore drilling here is opposed by most in CA and it will have little or no affect on our gasoline prices for nearly a decade!"
I can prove this is false.
Now, if I do, will you change your mind?
Proof: I made the argument when the price of oil had hit > $140 that due to speculation of long term shortage of supply and increasing demand, the price was rising. The way to get the price back down was to send the speculators a message that long term supply would be able to match demand.
GW Bush rescinded the presidential order to ban offshore drilling. Within only three days, the price dropped more than $18 a barrel. Had Congress also lifted the ban, oil prices would drop even further and faster. Speculators do not want to lose money. They are driven by what they see.
Now, if we put together a truly comprehensive plan for energy independence that included supply AND demand components (drilling, natural gas, wind, hydro, nuclear AND conservation stimulus) the suppliers of energy would panic and the price would plummet.
OK. Your turn.
kittyv: Glad to give you a gentle laugh without so much as to cause you to spit coffee on your keyboard.

Chart's fake so the entire premise is invalid.
When graphing, there have to be x and y components, or horizontal and vertical, or sideways and up and down.
This is just a drawing of colored lumps with no criteria assigned to the sideways and up and down components.
No values were assigned to define what makes a right wing or centrist or left wing voter.
So the assignment of values to the right hand side of the chart, or the left hand side, is all made up.
Pretty cute, tho, 'cause I know from the fake design who must have done it. It's the same part time PR consultants that McClintock hired to make statements to the media that Placer County is (supposedly) much further to the right than the rest of America, therefore, they will automatically vote for McClintock. That's the great thing about hiring people, you can get them to say anything for you, even if you sound like a loon in real life.
So Tommy Boy will be using the surrogates to keep pushing this idea that this one county is supposedly so far to the right that all Tommy Boy has to do is hire a PR gal to keep repeating this and as long as he keeps his mouth zipped it should work.
Because we all know that there's just one county in CA- 04, right? All the other counties don't count in the election process.
The problem with the Republicans is that they automatically labeled anything Democratic as "leftist. " Therefore, altho there may be more Democrats in registration nationally than there will ever be Republicans, the Republicans persist in this false meme that the number of people identifying as Democrats makes the country leftist. Some Democrats are pretty conservative in the classic sense of being fiscally sound.
But the basic difference between the Democrats and the Republicans at this point is that the Republicans had power in DC for years and are running on failed ideology and failure of applied policy at this point. There is no getting around that. The ONLY thing they have to run on, since they can't defend the indefensible, are the wedge issues which have nothing to do with any of the real problems facing our government.
Nobody runs for office to fit onto a fake chart. Except McClintock.
Canyon Rat __ You said, "This is just a drawing of colored lumps with no criteria assigned.." True, but they're really pretty colored lumps - - and he managed to color inside the lines.
Our_Tea said, "You guys like to think I am a right wing extremist..."
No, not really.
The truth is I don't spend time thinking about you at all. Your partisan dogma and emotional rants aren't relevant to rational dialog.
nicely written, CanyonRat.
i would agree that the republicans have been hijacked by the extreme far right for too long and it hasn't worked for America. you know how communism as an idealogy didn't work out in the countries that tried it... well, neither has neo-conservative right wing idealogies worked out for America. Just look around for plenty of proof of that.
and like when i was touring Russia* after the fall of the iron curtain, i still ran into many card carrying communists who just couldn't let it go or realize it was over and it didn't work... that's how i tend to view some of the far right wingers that can't let it go and acknowledge a better path is needed for the country. many have come around though and re-embraced the more traditional values of the republican party... which i can tolerate much better than the relatively recent (last 30 years or so) of Movement Conservatism.
(*not to bore anybody with why i was in Russia, but i spent weeks there in the early 90s with a group of American business people giving seminars on various business disciplines to help with the move to free enterprise.)
Canyon Rat, I explained it. No need to explain it again. If it went over your head, or you are just pretending... not my problem.
And of course, ThosPaIne is not happy cause his name was left off the list too.
Look at it this way, if you can't even spell your namesake properly, perhaps you SHOULD be using crayons.
R_T: How did ThosPaIne come into the discussion? Another example of your unique spelling?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_Paine
Have you noticed that if you turn Ratzo's Voter chart upside down, it sort of looks like a pink bikini?
Looks like Twiggy's bikini.
Rational_Thinker,
I didn't know you were a Stealers Wheel fan. Bad graph, great song.
R_T - I thought you were just poking a little friendly fun, when I said I was amused it was because I thought you were just showing a sense of humor, we shoud all be able to laugh at ourselves. I was mistaken I guess. No, I'm sorry I didn't short out my keyboard, maybe next time. But if it makes you feel any better, I did have this song stuck in my head all day.
gulliver; You say "bad graph, great song".
I agree on the song, but would appreciate some constructive feedback on the graph.
Do you think that our political index is not a normal distribution? Bi-Modal?
Provide a little more detail on the failings of the general concept.
Do you disagree that Obama is to the left of most Americans? Do you disagree that McCain is to the left of most Republicans?
I was actually hoping to get more discussion, less personal attacks or simple-minded dismissals.
Rational thinker,
The graph is bad because you or someone else made it up. The graph has no statistical relevance.
Rizzo-Ratzo: Simple-minded dismissals are what you get with simple-minded opinions. And it's "fewer persional attacks, not "less."
Joszef_Pelikan ____ Relevance, no. Pretty colors, yes. Rational thinker is living proof to the adage that some people can swim all day in the Sea of Knowledge and not get wet.
Hey guys, don't give 'ol rat_stink a hard time over his cute but worthless chart. At least it kept his mind off gay sex for a while...
UhHuh - It did? There's something very Freudian about those purple and pink bulges... oh, never mind.
Get out of your mothers house! RT is 14. Let him alone! Don't poke a rabid prepubescent dog before the teeth are sharp. I'm Astounded that you Would be sucked in by this RT's words! Tell His Mommy! Don't hear his words!! They are evil - don't listen! --- this is the dark side of the force!
OK, RT is to the right in this cartoon drawing. Does that make him the Joker.
Bootsz,
RT's spot on the graph doesn't make him the joker, it shows that he is little more than a standard deviant.
