Nursery nurtures reader devotion
Best of the Best

Julie and Don DeVorss, owners of Green Valley Nursery, share their nursery’s win with their dog Marley. Their business, in El Dorado Hills, was voted Best Nursery/Garden Supply by Telegraph readers.

Green Valley Nursery and Landscape is all about customer service, which is one reason they were voted Best of the Best nursery in El Dorado Hills.

Diana Hawk, of El Dorado Hills, has had two projects completed by the company.

“I love, love, love them,” she said. “We lived in our home for 11 years and things just didn’t look good anymore. I needed a revitalization.”

Hawk worked with nursery owners Julie and Don DeVorss, along with their design team, to complete two projects in her front yard.

For more than a decade Hawk disliked the center area of her circular driveway. Thanks to the DeVorsses, she said she now has a beautiful planted walkway area.

So satisfied with the first project Hawk had the DeVorsses complete a revamp of her entry way.

“We are on a well and there are water concerns,” Hawk said. “And we have deer and other critters out here. They listened to my concerns, were on time and planted beautiful plants.”

That’s the kind of response the DeVorsses strive for.

“Because we aren’t going anywhere, if we don’t do a good job it’s going to reflect on us. It would really be bad,” said co-owner Julie DeVorss. “We have to make sure every body stays super satisfied. The best way to land a new job is to make people happy.”

Julie and her husband grew up in the area. Julie attended local elementary schools and is a Ponderosa High School graduate.

Her parents still live in the area. She said any negative comments about her business would reflect poorly on her family — something she avoids at all costs by providing the best service she can.

Don is a licensed landscape contractor and together the two have owned and operated the nursery and landscape company for more than seven years.

They recently moved just down the road from their original Green Valley Road location, which was across the street from the Purple Place, to their new digs next to the strawberry stand just east of Shadow Fax Lane.

The nursery offers a range of acclimated plants, garden ornaments and pottery.

The landscape installation company does full-scale jobs as well as remodels and “spruce up jobs.”

“Because of the economy and the lack of new construction in the area, we are mostly doing spruce up jobs right now,” Julie said. “Most of our jobs come by referrals. We make our customers happy and they refer us to their friends.”

They may be the only nursery in town, but they aren’t the only game in town and they know it.

DeVorss said that the big box home improvement stores might be able to beat their prices, but not their quality.

She said that plants at their nursery are acclimated to the unique climate of the foothills and therefore, more likely to survive.

“We know what will work in this area — which means a better success rate,” DeVorss said.
