Editor's View: Honor students say it’s peanut butter and jelly time

Students with the Honor Society at Marina Village Middle School in El Dorado Hills have collected more than 300 jars of peanut butter and jelly for a women’s shelter. In charge of the drive are, from left, club treasurer Shanti Camper Singh, co-president Julia Guardino and co-president Leora Mazumdar.

When I was a kid, there was nothing quite like a peanut butter and jelly sandwich and a tall glass of milk.

The ingredients of the childhood favorite happened to also be on the wish list of a women and children’s center in El Dorado County.

That got some local students thinking about ways they could help.

“We collected about 300 jars of peanut butter and jelly and more than $200 in gift cards and monetary donations,” said Lisa Guardino, a teacher and an adviser for the Marina Village Middle School Honor Society.

The group comprises students who are required to maintain a certain grade point average and do community service projects.

“They come up with different projects throughout the year,” she said.

Since some of the students also do homeless outreach, they thought the women’s center was a perfect project.

They will be taking everything to The Center for Violence-Free Relationships in Placerville.

Students, thank you for a job well done.
