Brady Tait, left, and Kelsey Day perform a musical number during a final rehearsal of the play “Honk!”, which is a retelling of “The Ugly Duckling.” The play opened Saturday at Sutter Street Theatre.

The musical comedy “Honk!” opened last Saturday with a splash.

The show runs for five weeks at 1 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday at Sutter Street Theatre, 717 Sutter St., Folsom. Tickets are $13 to $17.

Honk!, an adaptation of the story “The Ugly Duckling,” is directed by Connie Mockenhaupt and Allen Schmeltz.

“It’s really a beautiful story for kids and adults,” Mockenhaupt said.

The “Ugly Duckling” is played by Brady Tait, 15, who won two Ellie awards last year for best actor and best supporting actor.

Actors range in age from 8-17.

Jordon Poczobutt, 11, plays the cat.

“I really like the music in the play because it’s energetic,” she said.

Poczobutt has been involved in theatre for seven years.

The production is part of the Sutter Street Theatre’s summer musical workshop, set designer Mike Jimena said.

“It’s very much based on education,” Jimena said. “They’re doing things like improv that they won’t use in ‘Honk!,’ but that’s something they need to know as performers.”

Actor Kelsey Day, 13, agrees.

“Being in the workshop teaches you all the basics of acting,” Day said.

Kim Tait, 51, of Folsom saw Honk! this weekend.

“We go to every show they have, whether it’s a children’s show or an adult one,” Tait said. “It’s nice to have good, quality entertainment in your back yard.”
