Pioneers set franchise record for wins
Final five regular season games at Folsom High this week
by Matt Long

The Folsom Pioneers finish their record-setting regular season this weekend with five home games at Folsom High School.

The Pioneers, 28-17 on the season, play host to the Sonoma Seals at noon on Thursday and Friday and then host the Redding Colt 45s for three league games over the weekend to conclude its season. The Pioneers and Colt 45s play a double header on Saturday with games at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. and conclude the series with a final game at noon on Sunday.

The series will be a preview of the first-round playoff match-up, as the teams will face each other in postseason play beginning Aug. 5 in Arcata. Redding leads the season series, winning two of three games the first week of July, but Folsom sits in second place in the league standings, just in front of Redding.

“This series will determine who finishes second in the league,” Folsom Manager Brant Cummings said. “I think we match-up well with them. They have very good starting pitching and we’re good and getting better. It’s a matter of putting all three pieces of the game together. Our pitchers have to throw strikes and locate and we also have to play good defense and execute on offense.”

Cummings said his team shouldn’t have to score 10 runs to win.

“What I mean by execute is that when we get runners in scoring position, especially on third base with less than two outs, we need to get them home,” Cummings said.

The Pioneers set a franchise record for most wins in a season on July 20 with a 24-2 win over the Nevada Bighorns, the team’s 25th win. The 24 runs scored was also a franchise mark for most runs in a game. The team’s three wins since then, beating California Glory 9-7 in 14 innings on Wednesday and 3-2 and 5-1 wins over Marysville Goldsox on Friday and Sunday, respectively, has added to their record number of wins.

“We’ve been playing well,” Cummings said. “We’ve made some mistakes here and there, but we’ve been pitching well, playing pretty good defense and swinging the bats better.”
