JV girls stay focused for every opponent
Staff Report

When you play for Oak Ridge, you know that no matter who the opponent is, you’re going to get their best game.

The good thing about that is that the Lady Trojans (22-2) have to be prepared to play everyone, even if it’s a team that defeated handily earlier in the season. That was the case on Thursday when Liberty Ranch came to El Dorado Hills. Liberty Ranch badly wanted to beat Oak Ridge and thought it could challenge the Lady Trojans, but the home team still won easily, 65-29.

“The girls did a good job being ready for the game,” Oak Ridge coach Annie Lamy said. “They didn’t come out casual with the attitude of ‘last time we beat you by 40 points.’ I think the fact that Liberty Ranch is so physical helped us be ready.”

Jenna Klein had a great game and a great week for Oak Ridge, scoring 24 points against Liberty Ranch and 23 the previous game against Galt. Haley Anderson scored 10 points and Amanda Jones added eight. Nicole Rucker, along with Lindsay Honaker and Sara Bocinski, led the way with an outstanding defensive effort.

“Nicole covered their top guard and the only time she scored was when Nicole wasn’t on her,” Lamy said. “Lindsay did a good job with help defense, as well.”

Honaker and Katie Hoisington both scored seven points in the win.

In the 73-34 win over Galt, Oak Ridge led 27-7 after the first quarter and breezed to the win. Following Klein’s 23 points, Anderson added 13, while Lauren Sende and Hoisington scored eight.

Frosh defeat El Dorado, Galt

The freshman team combined good offense in the first half against El Dorado with good defense in the second half on its way to a 55-28 win over the Cougars on Wednesday in a non-league game.

Oak Ridge (20-2) scored 18 points in both the first and second quarters, but unfortunately allowed the Cougars 22 points, which is about what Oak Ridge allows a game.

“We weren’t rotating very well in our press so I switched to a full-court man and we seemed to be in better position,” Oak Ridge coach Greg Lamy said. “We need to work on our press because the girls have to have that down when they get up to JV next year.”

Both of El Dorado’s main scoring threats scored eight points apiece in the first half. The Lady Trojans, however, rebounded with a strong defensive effort in the second half, shutting out both players, while holding the entire El Dorado team to only six points.

Nikki Dow led the way with 15 points, while Lauren Liebert added 12. Jenna Ford and Lauren Ona both chipped in eight.

“Everyone got extended minutes,” Lamy said. “This game saw the return of our outside shooting and that was nice to see.”

Oak Ridge finished the week with a 47-23 win over Liberty Ranch. After a strong first quarter which saw the Lady Trojans up 19-6, the team only scored seven points in the second quarter and led 26-12 at the break.

The team’s defense, however, was solid all night long, allowing Liberty Ranch only six points in each of the first three quarters and five in the fourth. Even though Oak Ridge only led 26-12 at the break, it didn’t need to score another point to win the game. A 19-6 advantage in the third quarter proved to be more than enough for Oak Ridge.

Dow scored 14 points in the win, while Liebert added nine and Ona scored six.
