Trojans handle Galt, 59-45
With a 59-45 win over Galt on Wednesday, Oak Ridge High has beaten every team in the Sierra Valley Conference. The Trojans avenged an earlier loss to the Warriors with a solid victory. While their shots weren’t falling moreso in the first half, they outscored the Warriors 25-18 in the fourth quarter to secure the win. Bryce Scott scored 12 of his 20 points in the fourth quarter, 10 from the foul line, to lead the team. No one else reached double figures for the Trojans, but seven players scored at least four points. Myles Suchan scored eight points and Zack McMillen added seven. Connor Benander and John Cunningham both scored five, while Matt Mendoza and Tyler Simms scored four each. Oak Ridge led most of the way, taking the lead for good with a Benander 3-pointer with 1:29 to play in the first quarter, 9-7. The Trojans maintained a decent lead throughout the half and led 22-15 at halftime. Galt scored the first six points of the third quarter to cut Oak Ridge’s lead to one, 22-21, but Benander and Suchan followed with baskets to push the lead back to five and by the end of the third quarter Oak Ridge maintained its seven-point halftime lead at 34-27. Oak Ridge scored the first 10 points of the fourth quarter, including all five of Leszczynski’s points, three by Scott and two by Suchan and led comfortably the rest of the way. Oak Ridge made 18-of-26 free throws on the night, while Galt struggled by making only 9-of-21 attempts. “We played with a lot of energy and played hard in the first half, but sometimes the round thing doesn’t go in the round hole,” Oak Ridge coach Bob Christensen said. “To their credit, though, the kids were persistent and played through it. I was proud of our effort and energy on defense in the first half, but I thought we could have shared the ball more on offense.” Suchan played a strong game for the Trojans at both ends of the floor. “Myles was injured early in the year but played his way back into shape and then into the rotation,” Christensen said. “Myles is a big, strong kid and he boards well and he earned his minutes tonight.”
