Scott, Ralstin advance to state meet
Staff Report

For the second straight year, Oak Ridge High’s Hayley Scott and Samantha Ralstin have qualified for the state track and field championships.

Scott, a junior, and Ralstin, a sophomore, will compete at the state meet on Friday and Saturday at Buchanan High School in Clovis.

At the Masters Meet held Friday at Hughes Stadium at Sac City College, Scott won the 1,600-meter run in 5 minutes, 2.77 seconds, finishing nearly three seconds in front of runner-up Christine Zavesky of Granite Bay, who ran a 5:05.20. It’s Scott’s second straight Masters title and she will be looking to improve on last year’s performance at the state meet, where she missed out on qualifying for the finals by four-tenths of a second, running a personal-best time of 4:59.37. The top-12 runners in Friday’s trials will advance to Saturday’s finals.

"I'd like to move into the finals," Scott said of her goals for the state meet. "Last year I barely missed it and I'm going to have to run faster this year. I think it will take a 4:56 to make the finals."

Ralstin took second in the Masters 800-meter run, posting a 2:16.67, trailing only Ponderosa’s Samantha Diaz, who ran a 2:14.50. It was Ralstin’s second straight year of placing second in the race.

She’ll be looking to improve on last year’s 21st-place finish in the state meet, where she ran a 2:18.52 and was six seconds from qualifying for the finals. Ralstin’s personal-best time is 2:15, which she ran at the section finals two weeks ago.

"My goal is to run a personal-best time, and I'd really like to reach 2:12," Ralstin said. "Going last year definitely will help me. I know how to race and get a good time."

The top-three placewinners at the Masters meet advanced to the state meet. Oak Ridge’s closest finishers not advancing included Aislynn Mueller, Sarah Vaughn and Will Findlay, who all earned fifth-place finishes. Mueller ran the 100-meter hurdles in a personal-best and school-record time of 14.97. Vaughn high jumped 5’3”, while Findlay cleared the bar at 6’4”.

Mueller also placed sixth in the 300-meter hurdles in 45.72, while Jenna Yowell placed sixth in the pole vault at 11’3”.

The girls’ 4x400-meter relay team of Holli Arrieta, Ralstin, Mueller and Scott also placed sixth in 4:00.36.

Two 3,200-meter runners earned seventh-place finishes, as Brittney Putman ran an 11:24.01, while Amjed Aboukhadijeh posted a 9:32.24. Abby Walker was Oak Ridge’s final top-10 placer, as she took eighth in the 800 meters in 2:23.86.
